The church was originally established by Mr Ballard in the 1800s as a place of refuge, relaxation and worship for the workers building the railway. It was designed so that it could be returned to domestic use at the end of the project. However, there was a perceived continued need and the church was managed by a variety of denominations over the years.
For the past 20 years or so it has been established as a free church operating under the guidance of the Salt & Light community of churches.
